Bieber mania! Justin Bieber was chased down by hordes of crazed teenage girls in Glendale, Arizona last Sunday

Bieber mania has hit the States!

It was like a scene from the 1964 Beatles movie Hard Day's Night as legions of Beliebers hunted and chased down their pop idol on the street.

The 16-year-old tried to escape, zipping off on a Segway, but to no avail and he was eventually cornered by his crazed fans.

Trying to escape: Bieber attempted to make a run for it aboard his Segway

Bieber had been enjoying a little downtime with some friends when he was spotted by a group of teenage girls last Sunday.

The singer was riding around the Westgate market place on his Segway in Glendale, Arizona, where he was scheduled to perform as part of his My World tour.

Despite his best attempts at escape, when he was caught Bieber was a good sport, taking the time to pose for pictures and sign autographs.

All the crazy action was caught by an onlooker on his phone who then posted the hilarious video on You Tube.

Bieber's fans are known for being particularly passionate when it comes to the pursuit of their idol.

In hot pursuit: Bieber's fans are not ones to give up the chase

When promoting his album My World, the teen sensation was scheduled to appear at Long Island's Roosevelt Field Mall but the event had to be cancelled after the crowds became so out of control.

More than 35 units from the Nassau County and Garden City police departments had to be deployed and fans were physically injured.

Then just last April a scheduled performance by Bieber was cancelled by Australian police after several girls were hurt in a crowd rush.

In a Twitter message after the cancellation Bieber wrote: 'I want to make this clear...I don't cancel.

'I woke up this morning to the police cancelling the show for safety reasons. I'm very happy about the welcome and the love from around the world, but I want everyone to remember that my fans' safety comes first.

'At the end of the day I want you all to enjoy the music.'

Cornered: Bieber's fans won through in the end, cornering the star, who posed for photos and signed autographs

The singer's tour has been a sell-out success, forcing him to add a second leg, with shows scheduled until Christmas.

Bieber mania is rife with the star's fans turning out in their droves to catch a glimpse of the fresh-faced heart-throb.

The performer is taking fame in his stride, though. He recently told The Today Show's Matt lauer: 'It's pretty crazy that now I go out and I'm always asked for autographs and stuff, but it's kind of what I signed up for.'

And Bieber's determined to not be a flash in the pan, going on to say: 'I want to be an artist that doesn't just come out with one song and they're done.

'I want to be able to, you know, like you said, have longevity - have my fans grow with me and not just be a teen artist but kind of move up and be an adult artist.'

Acting chops: Bieber will be appearing as a teen delinquent in an upcoming episode of the crime drama CSI

The Canadian-born teen was discovered by music manager Scooter Braun after he spotted some performances that Bieber had posted on You Tube.

Braun is well known in the hip hop community, having represented Snoop Dogg, Kevin Federline and Asher Roth.

He introduced Bieber to R&B superstar Usher who signed him to his label, subsequently landing Bieber with a recording contract with Island records.

Bieber is currently branching out, making a foray into acting. He is set to appear in an upcoming episode of the crime drama CSI, playing a teen delinquent.

True to form Twitter addict Bieber posted pictures of himself on set, along with the message: 'BIG DAY today....excited. doing something new.

'CSI premieres on Thursday, Sept 23rd on CBS ... and I told you I was a BAD MAN!!'
